Alton: Buford Henry, 95, passed away at 10:18am on Monday, October 1, 2018, at Willow Rose Nursing Home in Jerseyville. He was born on February 13, 1923, in Rombauer, Missouri, the son of the late August and Darlie (Hood) Henry. He married the former Marie Rose on December 22, 1956, in Alton, and she preceded him in death on December 10, 2016. Survivors include two daughters and sons in law: Cheryl and Greg Johnson of Godfrey, Beth and Alan Herbstreit of Godfrey, one son and daughter in law: David and Kris Henry of Godfrey, twelve grandchildren: Steve B. Henry, Jr., Amber Henry, Jaycee (Solomon) Tsfazgie, Aaron Henry, Megan Henry, Brad Henry, Nick (Jayme) Herbstreit, Sam Herbstreit, Thomas (Beth) Richards, Andrew Johnson, Amanda (Andy) Irwin, Adam Johnson, seven great grandchildren, two sisters and a brother in law: Pansy Schuetz of Litchfield and Lena and Jim Baze of Alton. In addition to his parents and his wife of sixty years, he was preceded in death by a son: Steven Henry, Sr., seven sisters: Arlene Smoot, Norma Osborn, Lucille Turner, Virginia Rawlings, Ruth Keber, Grace Dalton, Lillie Buchanan. After graduation from Carpenters School, Buford went to work as a carpenter through the Carpenters Local 377. He was a member of Godfrey Church of the Nazarene. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and going to garage sales. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served at Omaha Beach, the Battle of the Bulge, Normandy, Northern France, Rineland, Ordennes Alsoc, Central Europe. He received five major battle awards and earned a Bronze Star. He was also at the Buchenvald Concentration Camp and had many pictures of it. He was a member of the Alton VFW Post #1308. Buford and his daughter Cheryl went on an Honor Flight in June of 2016. In celebration of his life, visitation will be from will be from 3pm to 7pm on Thursday, October 4, 2018, at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River. Funeral services will be held at 10am on Friday, October 5, 2018, at the funeral home. Rev. Joel Lohr will officiate. Burial will follow at Upper Alton Cemetery with full military rites by the Ritual Team of VFW Post 1308 of Alton. Memorials are suggested to Honor Flight, Inc., 8764 Manchester Road, Suite 203, St. Louis, Missouri, 63144, and will be accepted at the funeral home.
