Cheryl Ann Martinez, 79, passed away peacefully and went to be with Jesus at 1:10pm on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at Villas of Hollybrook surrounded by her family and close friends. She was born on January 26, 1947, in Alton, the daughter of the late Fredrick and Elizabeth (Kaulen) Vermillion. She married Henry “Marty” Martinez on October 28, 1967, in Bethalto, and he survives. Other survivors include her children and their spouses: Kristie and Jasen Shaw of Rosewood Heights, Matthew and Leslie Martinez of Bethalto, Amanda and Alan Franklin of Staunton, her grandchildren: Shelby and Justin Murphy, Lauren and Devin Davis, Joshua (fiancé: Krysten Ruppert) Martinez, Samantha Martinez, Jake Martinez, Adriana Jeffries, Brooklyn Jeffries, Logan Franklin, two great grandchildren: Shiloh Murphy, Harley Davis, a sister: Sue Robeen of Lees Summit, Missouri, and many other extended family and friends.
A devout Catholic, Cheryl loved Jesus and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton and was a member of the Daughters of Isabella in Wood River. Cheryl was an avid gardener and was a very artistic person. Cheryl was a lady of many different talents. She enjoyed spending time painting, flowers, camping, antiquing, and going to car shows with her husband Marty. Cheryl will be remembered by her classy demeanor, her fiery red hair, and her spunky personality.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 11am until time of funeral services at 1pm on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River. Father Nathan Marzonie, OMV will officiate. In accordance with her wishes and following her funeral, cremation rites will be accorded. Private burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials are suggested to St. Louis Children’s Hospital and will be accepted at the funeral home.
