David L. “Pork E. Pine” Harris, 71, passed away at 5:48am on Friday, March 21, 2014, at his residence. He was born on June 19, 1942, in Evansville, Indiana, the son of the late Forrest and Daisy Harris. He married the former Marty Turpin Harvey on August 5, 1987, in Alton and she survives. Other survivors include one son: Robert Harris of Evansville, Indiana, one daughter: Krystal Harris of Palm Bay, Florida, two step daughters: Deneen Philbeck of Wood River, Dana Harvey of Wood River, one grandson: Brandon Harris of Carmi, Illinois, two great grandchildren, two sisters and a brother in law: Dorothy and William Effinger of Evansville, Indiana, Joyce (Laverne) Hayes of Hineston, Louisiana, two brothers and a sister in law: Donald Harris of Granite City, Marion and Brenda Harris of Evansville, Indiana, several step – children, step – grandchildren, nieces and nephews all whom adored him as well as all of his friends that he met while he was employed at Schnucks. He was an avid golfer as well as a member of the Wood River Masonic Lodge. When he joined the Alton Leathernecks he became heavily involved in the Toys for Tots program. He enjoyed the camaraderie and all the hours with his friends. He proudly served with the United States Marine Corps from 1959 to 1963 and proudly kept the Corps a big part of his life. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson: Bradley Harris. In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 2pm until time of reflection at 4pm on Monday, March 24, 2014, at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River. In accordance with his wishes, cremation rites follow. Full military rites will be conducted by the Alton Leathernecks. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Toys for Tots and will be accepted at the funeral home. The Toys for Tots toy boxes will also be set up in case someone wants to bring a toy.
