Gloria Jean Summer

Girard: Gloria Jean Summer, age 72, passed away on January 26, 2020. She was born on April 22, 1947, to Barbegine Mead Smith and Lewis Smith. Gloria spent her youth in Ridgeway and Decatur, IL and moved to Girard in 1983. Gloria worked for R&R Bindery Services in Girard, Illinois for 31 years, beginning as a machine operator and retiring as a department supervisor in 2014. Gloria met her match, Larry Summer, at Andy’s in Girard. They married on June 18, 1990 and were together until he passed away in 2019. Gloria was a fierce mother, wife, sister, and grandmother. She enjoyed fishing Otter Lake and hunting for small game in southern Illinois. Gloria also spent time sewing, gardening, cooking for loved ones, and chasing around the family dogs. Gloria delighted in any song that could lead to a good Kentucky stomp. Gloria is survived by three children, Malinda (Nial Ginger), Barbara Sanders, and Joe Sanders (Megan); 8 grandchildren, Amber Camfield, Kyle & Justin Ginger, Gregory & Grace Sanders, Cash & Colt Hubble, Waylon Lobb; and ten great-grandchildren. Gloria is also survived by a brother Lewis Smith (Kathy) and a sister Vivian Sebens. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Brigitte Hubble. Graveside services will be held at 11am on Saturday, April 11, 2020, at the Girard Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor her memory may make contributions to the HSHS St. John’s Foundation, at St. John’s Hospital, Springfield, Illinois.
