Herbert “Herb” Hatten, 92, passed away at 8pm on Monday, September 29, 2025, at Cedarhurst of Bethalto. He was born on March 14, 1933, in Alton, the son of the late Frank and Lucille (Karns) Hatten. He married the former Ann Bruce on June 9, 1956, in Alton, and she preceded him in death on September 10, 2019. Survivors include a daughter and son in law: Annette and Timothy Matifes of Alton, two sons and daughters in law: Bruce and Karen Hatten of Bethalto, Bennett and Trish Hatten of Creve Couer, Missouri, six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.
He was a laborer in the Laborer’s Local 338. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by four sisters: Mary Adams, Marietta Hatten, Iona Eyers, Wilma Warren, two brothers: Eddie Hatten and David Hatten.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 4pm to 7pm on Friday, October 3, 2025, at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River. Funeral services will be at 10am on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at the funeral home. Pastor Dan Smith will officiate. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with full military honors by the Ritual Team of VFW Post 1308 of Alton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association and the American Kidney Foundation and will be accepted at the funeral home.
