James J. "Jim" Sutton

South Roxana: James J. “Jim” Sutton, 86, passed away at 6:08pm on Sunday, November 29, 2020, at Alton Memorial Hospital. He was born on January 28, 1934, in Calhoun County, Illinois, the son of the late Fred and Moreen (Stevens) Sutton. He married the former Rita Hanfelder on January 31, 1959, in Wood River, and she survives. Other survivors include a daughter: Linda Weller of Wood River, a son: Jeffrey Sutton of South Roxana, four grandchildren: Nicholas and Elizabeth Sutton, Allyssa and Jonathan Walker, Christine Weller, Caleb Sutton, ten great grandchildren: Anna, Mercedes, Sebastian, Ari, Lara, Isaiah, Gideon, Mae, Millie, Bethany, a sister: Shirley Kleeman of Rosewood Heights, a brother and sister in law: Bill and Diana Sutton of Bethalto, many nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends. Jim was employed for thirty – one years at Laclede Steel as a tractor driver prior to his retirement. Following his retirement, Jim went to McDonald’s every morning to drink coffee with the guys. He loved working in his garage, fixing things, fishing, playing pinochle, and spending time with his family. He attended St. John’s United Church of Christ in Wood River. He was a veteran of the United States Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Carl Sutton. Due to the current Covid – 19 restrictions, private funeral services will be held on Friday, December 4, 2020, at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Wood River. Rev. Duane Dolgenger will officiate. Burial will follow at Wanda Cemetery in South Roxana. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor’s choice.
