Kathleen M. “Kathy” House, 89, formerly of Granite City, passed away at 11:43pm on Monday, June 22, 2026 at Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, IL. She was born on December 13, 1936, in Granite City, the daughter of the late Harry and Katherine (Gorman) Reedy. She married David House on October 20, 1956 at Sacred Heart (now known as Holy Family) Catholic Church in Granite City, and he preceded her in death on January 18, 2010.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, David “Mike” and Marianne House of Peoria, IL and Patrick House of St. Louis, MO; a daughter and son-in-law, Marilee and Tim Burch of Springfield, IL; three grandchildren and one grandson-in-law: Jon House, Aimee Burch and Michael Belding, and Tim Burch; and many other extended family and friends. She delighted in the company of the family’s pets as a “Dog Grandma” and most recently would talk about and show pictures of her “Great-Granddog” Eadwulf Belding-Burch to anyone who would listen.
Kathy lived in Granite City for more than 80 years, all but a few of them at the house her father built on Iowa Street. She was formerly employed at Granite City Public Schools where she was a special needs aide and a high school hall monitor.
Kathy’s most beloved pastime was spending time with her family and taking joy in their joys. With David she traveled throughout Illinois to spend time with their family, rarely missing a chance to watch their grandkids at track meets, swim meets, sports fields, and any other activities. Often in the fall they would visit Pere Marquette to go eagle-watching. Her family’s interests became her own - she loved watching “Dancing with the Stars” with her granddaughter, hearing about her grandson Jon’s work in television production, and started following the Chicago Bears and the English Premier League’s Everton Football Club thanks to the influence of her grandson Tim.
Her interests included reading, appreciating others’ art and drawing or painting her own, and history, and she took pride in being from the St. Louis area. She was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and was in the crowd at Busch Stadium during Game 4 of the 1985 World Series, where Ozzie Smith signed her ticket. Sometimes, these overlapped, as when on one of her many nights volunteering as an usher at the “Fabulous” Fox Theater, she guided to his seat “Mr. LaRussa,” who put her on a first-name basis, saying, “Call me Tony.”
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Trudy Thalmann, and a brother, Kevin Reedy. In a testament to the importance she placed on caring for others, she will be remembered for the greeting cards she sent family and friends at every occasion and the thousands of candles she must have lit as she raised others up in her prayers.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 10am until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11am on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City. Father Stephen Thompson will be the celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Glen Carbon.
Memorials are suggested to Holy Family Catholic Church and will be accepted at the services.
