Lorene Goessman

November 9, 1923 — March 1, 2016

Edwardsville: Lorene Goessman, 92, passed away at 10:25am on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at home with her family by her side while under the care of BJC Hospice. She was born on November, 9, 1923 at her grandmother's home in Marion, Illinois. She is the daughter of Hobart and Myrtle (Sims) Quertermous. She married Billy G. Goessman on December 10, 1949, in Waukegan, Illinois. He preceded her in death on November 8, 2013. Lorene was a "Rosey the Riveter" during WWII, welding LST ships. As a result of her welding and doing service to her country, she developed asbestosis. She worked for years in downtown Wood River at Sid's Shoe Store, was an office clerk for the Hotel & Restaurant Employees Union and retired as a real estate agent for Century 21. Always the athlete, she won a basketball medal as a standout at Marion High School and was an active member of Leisure World Health Club since its opening in 1983, until the age of 91. Over the years she made many friends at Leisure World and missed seeing her "poolside pals". She was an avid knitter and her beautiful afghans grace the home of scores of people throughout the Riverbend area. With her family, she attended Enjoy Church in Alton. She was a "pink lady" volunteer with the Wood River Hospital Auxiliary, was a member of the Wood River Senior Citizens, Wood River Junior Woman’s Club and the Illinois State Police Wives Association, appearing once with them on the Charlotte Peters Show. Most importantly, she was always there for her family. With her busy work schedule she made time to volunteer as a Scouting Leader, a Room Mother, with the PTA and celebrated in the special activities, sports and events of her children and grandchildren. Lorene is survived by a daughter and son and their spouses, Robert & Cheryl Maguire of Wood River, Max & Marsha Goessman of Alton; a granddaughter and grandson and their spouses, Lauren & Kevin Moore, Lenon & Angie Maguire; a great-granddaughter Darcy Maguire; nephews DeWayne Jones, Robert Jones, D. Brad Jones; a sister-in-law Joyce Jones and a cousin Wayland Sims. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her loving sister, Marguerite "Syd" Jones. A private visitation for family and friends will be held from 11am until time of funeral services at 12pm on Friday, March 4, 2016, at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River. Pastor David Weimer will officiate. Burial will follow at Wanda Cemetery in South Roxana. Memorials may be made to the Wood River Woman’s Club or the National Marfan Foundation and will be accepted at the funeral home.
