Mary Elliott

August 12, 1958 — August 8, 2022

Mary Helen (Sumner) Elliott passed away peacefully in hospice care at Anderson Hospital on Monday, August 8, 2022, at 6:12 pm, after a short illness. She was surrounded by her family and will be profoundly missed by many. Mary was born on August 12, 1958, in Alton, IL, as the sixth of seven children of the late Rita (Rielley) and Howell Sumner. Mary was a 1976 graduate of Roxana High School where she was proud to be a Shell and member of the cheerleading squad for several years. She married Jeff Elliott in Roxana, IL, on May 17, 1980. Mary and Jeff had two children and celebrated 36 years of marriage before Jeff passed away December 30, 2016. Mary’s favorite things in life were spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren, Lilly and Cameron; listening to classic rock favorites from her youth at rocking volumes; reminiscing about fun times that were had on ‘The Hill’ with family and friends; and her dog, Mojo. She is survived by two daughters, Lindsay Elliott and Andrea (Jason) McGuiggan, both of Bethalto, and grandchildren, Lilly and Cameron. Mary is also survived by three siblings: Sue (Dennis) Dorris of Holiday Shores, and Sue’s daughter, Haley Fiegenbaum Fisher; Julie (Bob) Garibaldi of Glenview, IL, and their sons, Mick and Jesse; and Jim Sumner of Wood River. Mary will also be missed by her in-laws and many other family members and friends. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Jeff; her parents; three siblings: Debby Sumner, Nancy Sumner, and Cathy Sumner; and a nephew, Adam Fiegenbaum. Cremation rites were accorded. Memorial visitation will be from 2pm to 6pm on Sunday, August 14, 2022, at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River. Celebration of life services will be held at 10:30am on Monday, August 15, 2022, at the funeral home. The family would also like to express their extreme gratitude to the staff at VITAS Hospice Healthcare and the physicians and staff at Anderson Hospital for their compassion and providing excellent care. Mary’s selfless and caring nature were apparent to all who knew her. As such, in lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate if memorials in her name were directed to VITAS Hospice Community Connection of Illinois or Mid-America Transplant of the St. Louis Area where her organs were donated.
