Robert (Bob) Boger, 95, of Orlando, FL passed away on Monday, March 13, 2023. He was born on March 13, 1928, in Mounds, Illinois, the son of the late Fred and Nellie (Sharp) Boger. He married Marjorie Joyce Bevill on November 27, 1952, and they were happily married for 52 years. He is survived by his daughter, Lisa (Frank) Sheppard of Winter Park, FL; his grandson, Andrew M. Sheppard of Venice, CA; and his granddaughter, Elyse M. Sheppard of Atlanta, GA. He was predeceased by his brother, Melbourn L. Boger. He is also survived by his sister, Charlene Sanders of Granite City, IL and many nieces and nephews.
After being honorably discharged from the United States Army in Germany, Bob returned to the St. Louis area. He was employed by Pittsburgh Testing Laboratory in St. Louis as the District Manager in the 1960’s. While there he did the concrete specifications for the 10-ton keystone piece at the pinnacle point of the Gateway Arch. Bob was on site and at the top of the Arch on October 28, 1965, when the piece was put in place. He was subsequently employed by Sverdrup Engineering for 35 years, where he began his construction management career working on the Busch Stadium and the St. Louis Wastewater treatment system. He was then transferred to southern West Virginia, where he oversaw the moving of roads and railways to higher ground for the construction of the R.D. Bailey Dam. In 1976, he was relocated to Jacksonville, Florida by Sverdrup Engineering where he worked on many of the company’s projects. After retiring from Sverdrup Engineering, Bob worked another five years for Williams Engineering in Jacksonville, overseeing the completion of 1800 cell phone towers in Florida, Southern Georgia, and Alabama.
Bob was a devout Christian and was always involved in his church and active in many ministries. He was a former member of the Second Baptist Church in Granite City, IL; Pineville Baptist Church in Pineville, WV; San Jose Baptist Church in Jacksonville, FL and First Baptist Church of Winter Park, FL. Bob was known for his baritone voice in all the churches he attended. He was the Minister of Music in Granite City and Pineville where he led many musical programs for adults and young people. Bob taught Sunday School to all ages and lead a Seniors group at San Jose Baptist called ESP (Extra Special People) for over twenty years.
Bob was unfailingly kind, and always sincerely interested in other people. He had that unusual ability when he talked to you to make you feel in that moment that you had his undivided attention. He had a wonderful memory for details and dates; he enjoyed traveling and always enjoyed talking about his adventures.
Throughout it all, Bob was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved his extended family and cherished his time with them.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, March 27th at 11 am at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Glen Carbon, IL.
