Robert Greg McDonough, 62, of Hartford, Illinois, passed away at 2:18 a.m. on Sunday, October 5, 2025, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chesterfield, Missouri.
Born on March 20, 1963, in St. Louis, Missouri, he was the son of the late Eugene T. and E. Celesta (Crossman) McDonough. Robert was a proud and skilled carpenter with over 30 years of dedicated service through the St. Louis-Kansas City Carpenter’s Local #664. He took immense pride in his work, contributing to major projects throughout the region and generously lending his talent to countless home renovations for friends and family.
A man of strong values and quiet strength, Robert was deeply devoted to his family. He took great pride in the McDonough name and loved his daughters and granddaughter fiercely. He was a loyal son who cared lovingly for his late mother, and he was rarely seen without his faithful dog, Lyla, at his side.
Robert’s passions were simple yet deeply meaningful. He found peace on the water—whether fishing, boating, shining up his beloved yellow Gambler bass boat and was always ready for the next trip to Coffeen Lake. He loved music and played guitar, enjoyed deer hunting, NASCAR and powerboat racing and his days of a good fishing tournament. He liked hot rods, also had a soft spot for his classic ‘79 Slap Shift Camaro and could often be found with friends, enjoying a cold one and sharing stories.
He was most proud when cheering on his daughters and granddaughter on the softball field—a role he cherished above all.
Robert is survived by his two daughters, Dana Leigh McDonough and Erin Michelle (Freddie III) Skelton, both of Hartford; his beloved granddaughter, Makynna K. Skelton; former wife and mother of his children, Jackie McDonough; sister-in-law, Karen McDonough; niece, Kary Lynn McDonough-Snaza; as well as extended family and many dear friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Gary E. McDonough, and nephew, Jason McDonough.
A celebration of his life will be held at Pitchford Funeral Home, 2555 Vaughn Road in Wood River. Visitation will take place on Friday, October 10, 2025, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., officiated by Reverend Sharon Autenrieth, with burial at Wanda Cemetery in South Roxana.
