William "Bill" Johnson

August 7, 1931 — July 14, 2016

Roxana: William C. Johnson, 84, passed away at 5:25am on Thursday, July 14, 2016, at Eunice C. Smith Nursing Home in Alton. He was born August 7, 1931, in Roxana, the son of the late Roy C. and Loleta (Jackson) Johnson. He married the former Shirley Fraser on January 12, 1957, in Wood River, and she survives. Other survivors include one son: William Craig Johnson of Wood River, a brother: Bobby Dean Johnson of Louisiana, six nieces, three nephews, and many other extended family and friends. Bill was formerly employed at Shell Oil for 33 years as a truck driver. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, camping, basketball, taking cruises, and going out west. He was on the chain gang at Roxana High School for many years. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served in the Korean Conflict. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Vera Mae Wilson and Betty Jean Stevens. In celebration on his life, visitation will be from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday, July 17, 2016, at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River. Graveside services will be held on Monday, July 18, 2016, at 10am at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens Chapel in Bethalto. Memorials are suggested to the Ritual Team of VFW Post 1308 of Alton or the Roxana Schools Foundation and will be accepted at the funeral home.
